S\u00e9duit par leur m\u00e9tier de liciers, il d\u00e9cide de collaborer avec leur atelier de Cavalaire pour la transposition en tapisserie du tableau Les Arlequins. Cette premi\u00e8re collaboration en 1954 est une r\u00e9ussite artistique et technique : l\u2019\u00e9nergie du trait et la vigueur du dessin sont maintenues tout en donnant une ampleur nouvelle. Rockefeller (1908-1979), homme politique am\u00e9ricain, m\u00e9c\u00e8ne et collectionneur d\u2019art moderne, commande en 1955 \u00e0 l\u2019atelier des Du\u0308rrbach une tapisserie monumentale d\u2019apr\u00e8s Guernica avec la condition qu\u2019elle soit r\u00e9alis\u00e9e en \u00e9troite collaboration avec Picasso.
